Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) Training

The Standard for Excellence

About DSAT Training

The Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) is described by the UK MOD’s ‘JSP822 – Defence direction and guidance for training and education’ as the system that must be used by those who are involved in the analysis, design, delivery, assurance, management and governance of Defence Learning. For a supplier into a UK MoD programme, it is the system that must be employed to develop the training package that will be delivered along with its product.

Our training will give experienced training developers, new training developers or training managers a foundational knowledge of DSAT instructional system design (ISD).

The Goal

To enable you, and your organisation, to develop DSAT compliant training content and packages.

What You Will Learn:

  • The principles of the Systems Approach to Training (SAT)

  • The Training Needs Analysis (TNA) process

  • The relationship between SAT & TNA with JSP822 and DSAT

  • Why correct Course Design is necessary

  • The Course Design process

  • The Requirements to conduct Course Design

Types of DSAT Training

There are currently three courses in our DSAT portfolio.

DSAT for Non-Defence Trainers (D4NDT)

A short, facilitated session that delivers an overview of the DSAT process to an experienced training developer (or team of training developers) that is new to the DSAT process. Building on the experience of the audience, this session will overlay the DSAT process onto the audience’s existing understanding of training development, enabling to recognise and align the common underpinning concepts.

DSAT Element 1 – Analysis

A practical, classroom-based course that begins by establishing the need for training and, from this, exploring the first of DSATs 4 ISD Elements – Analysis. Introducing training needs analysis (TNA) as a logical, analytical approach to defining training requirements, the TNA process is addressed and, at each stage, the relevant theory is presented and discussed; this is then consolidated through a series of practical exercises. This approach ensures that the delegate has a sound understanding of the concepts and the issues associated with TNA within DSAT.

DSAT Element 2 – Course Design

A practical, classroom-based course that builds on the outputs of the DSAT Element 1 (Analysis). DSAT Element 2 – Design will introduce the delegate to the considerations and process of Course Design. The audience is introduced to the way in which the Course Design process deploys and leverages the TNA process outputs.
