Standards Behind Our Training
The industry and defense standards our courses are built on, and where to learn them.
Know the Standard, Then Apply It
Most supportability and reliability work is governed by a published standard. Our courses teach you what each one requires and how to actually do the work on a real program. Use this page to find the standard you're working to and the course that covers it.
Product Support Analysis and Logistics Product Data
The SAE standards behind product support on defense programs: how the analysis is done, and how the data it produces is captured and exchanged.
Product Support Analysis
SAE TA-STD-0017 establishes a structured framework for conducting Product Support Analysis (PSA) to identify and define the support, operational, and maintenance requirements of a system throughout its life cycle. It provides a systematic approach for developing product support strategies, analyzing supportability requirements, and identifying the resources needed to operate and sustain a system effectively.
The standard integrates Product Support Analysis with the broader engineering and acquisition process and supports the development of Logistics Product Data (LPD) in accordance with SAE GEIA-STD-0007. It is widely used within defense programs to support informed decisions related to maintenance, manpower, support equipment, supply support, facilities, and other Integrated Product Support requirements.
Logistics Product Data
SAE GEIA-STD-0007 establishes a standardized framework for capturing, exchanging, and managing Logistics Product Data (LPD) throughout a product's life cycle. The standard defines structured data elements and relationships that support key Integrated Product Support activities, including reliability and maintainability, maintenance planning, provisioning, support equipment, manpower and personnel, facilities, packaging, and transportation.
Adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense, GEIA-STD-0007 provides a modern approach to organizing logistics and product support data and supports informed sustainment and life-cycle management decisions.
Reliability Centered Maintenance
The criteria a process has to meet before it can be called RCM.
Evaluation Criteria for Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)
SAE JA1011 establishes the minimum criteria a process must satisfy to be considered Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM). The standard provides a structured framework for evaluating an asset's functions, functional failures, failure modes, failure effects, and failure consequences to determine appropriate maintenance strategies.
The RCM process uses seven fundamental questions to guide analysis and maintenance decision-making within an asset's specific operating context. By systematically evaluating failure consequences and identifying applicable and effective proactive tasks or default actions, SAE JA1011 supports the development of maintenance programs focused on preserving required system functions, managing risk, and supporting effective life-cycle maintenance decisions.
Level of Repair Analysis
Deciding whether an item is repaired, replaced, or discarded, and where that work happens.
Level of Repair Analysis (LORA)
SAE AS1390 establishes the requirements and activities for performing Level of Repair Analysis (LORA) throughout a product's life cycle. LORA provides a structured methodology for determining whether systems, subsystems, and components should be repaired, replaced, or discarded and where maintenance actions should be performed within the support structure.
The analysis considers both economic and noneconomic factors, including life-cycle costs, operational requirements, safety, reliability, personnel skills, support equipment, facilities, transportation, and other supportability considerations. By evaluating these factors as system designs and support requirements evolve, LORA supports informed maintenance and product support decisions while balancing operational needs and life-cycle support costs.
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
A consistent way to find potential failures early and decide what to do about them.
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
SAE1025 establishes a structured approach for performing Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify potential failure modes, evaluate their effects, and assess associated risks throughout a product's life cycle. The standard modernizes traditional FMEA and FMECA practices and provides a consistent methodology for supporting risk-informed design, maintenance, and product support decisions.
The standard addresses multiple applications, including Design FMEA (DFMEA), Software FMEA (SwFMEA), Supportability FMEA (SupFMEA), Process FMEA (PFMEA), and quantitative criticality analysis. It supports early identification of potential failures and helps organizations develop mitigation strategies that improve system performance, supportability, and life-cycle decision-making.
ASD S-Series: Integrated Product Support (IPS) Specifications
The ASD S-Series is a coordinated suite of international specifications designed to support Integrated Product Support (IPS) activities throughout a product's life cycle. Developed collaboratively by the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) and the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), the specifications provide a common framework for managing supportability, maintenance, supply support, technical information, training, and in-service data.
Together, these specifications promote standardized processes and interoperable data to support system availability, operational readiness, and effective life-cycle management.
